Chessnut has launched Chessnut Move, a fully autonomous robotic chessboard with self-moving pieces designed to blend classic chess with advanced technology.
The board features self-moving pieces, online connectivity via Chess.com and Lichess, and integrated AI opponents and training modes, providing an immersive playing experience for casual and professional players.
Chessnut Move features official tournament dimensions (63×52 cm, 5.5 cm squares) and comes with either handcrafted wooden pieces or a durable plastic set. Each chess piece is equipped with its own motor, wheels, and battery, allowing for simultaneous movement without a mechanical arm beneath the board. The piece positions are tracked with 1 mm accuracy and updated ten times per second.
The package includes a multi-piece charging dock, two USB-C cables, a detailed manual, and spare bases and screws.
Advanced features include individual piece recognition and multiple play modes, including OTB (offline) mode for playing against the built-in AI engine and Online Mode for synchronized matches on Chess.com or Lichess. The system also supports voice recognition in Spanish, integration with chess engines like Stockfish and Shait Zero, and PGN export for post-game analysis.
Other features include an adjustable move delay to prevent accidental move registration when repositioning pieces manually.
In OTB mode, players can start a match by disabling Bluetooth and selecting a color or difficulty level. A reset button automatically returns the pieces to their starting positions after the game ends.
Online Mode enables synchronized games on Chess.com and Lichess with supported rules, voice control, and real-time accuracy.
Advantages of Chessnut Move include individually motorized pieces, long-lasting battery life (up to two weeks per charge), high-quality materials, an elegant design, and integration with Lichess and Chess.com.
Drawbacks include a premium price (approximately $719 USD for plastic and $799 USD for wooden versions), an ongoing refinement of the Spanish app translation, and a higher mechanical sensitivity due to more moving parts, although warranty and spare parts are included.
