TORONTO, August 19, 2025 — Augmenta, a generative design platform for the built environment, has appointed Richard Zhang as Vice President of AI and R&D. Zhang, a professor at Simon Fraser University and a member of the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy, will lead Augmenta’s AI development for building designs.
Zhang stated his research focuses on 3D generative AI and structured representation learning, and expressed excitement about applying these principles to the construction industry. In his new role, Zhang will speed up the development of Augmenta’s AI technology, initially supporting the electrical raceway design solution and integrating data-driven techniques to improve the generated designs. He will position Augmenta as a leader in Building Information Modeling (BIM) with spatial and functional intelligence.
Francesco Iorio, co-founder and CEO of Augmenta, noted Zhang’s expertise will help to realize their vision of making all new buildings cost-effective and sustainable. The hiring of Zhang follows the announcement of its first completed building project, the Mt. Hope Elementary School in Lansing, Michigan, which used AI to design a critical function. Augmenta also added Mark Tepper, formerly of Matterport, qbiq and Metropolis, as VP of Sales.
