October 7, 2025 — Leads & Copy — Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) has secured a $7.5 million contract renewal with the US Navy through its subsidiary, Planet Labs Federal, for vessel detection and monitoring in the Pacific.
The project integrates Planet’s PlanetScope and SkySat data into the Department of Transportation’s SeaVision platform, a maritime situational awareness tool co-developed with the US Navy. The contract also utilizes AI technology from SynMax for vessel detections and analytics.
Planet’s daily global scan helps provide the SeaVision platform with near real-time vessel monitoring across millions of square kilometers. The US Navy also accesses Planet’s high-resolution data for additional intelligence. SynMax’s Theia technology enables detection of potential “dark vessels” using the Automatic Identification System (AIS), revealing possible smuggling, illegal fishing, and illicit ship-to-ship transfers. This data is shareable amongst SeaVision users, creating a common operating picture in the Pacific.
Jon Powers, Planet Federal’s VP of Global Defense and Intelligence, stated that understanding the maritime environment is critical, and Planet is proud to support the US Navy and regional partners with imagery-based insights.
Planet Labs Federal equips US Federal Civilian Agencies, the Department of Defense, and Intelligence Community with satellite data and analytics.
