Ottawa, ON — October 2, 2025 — Leads & Copy — BluWave-ai and Area X.O, founded by Invest Ottawa, have announced the deployment of a project to optimize grid-scale batteries. The project uses BluWave-ai EV Everywhere™ and BluWave-ai Energy Storage Autopilot to manage grid congestion and is co-funded by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Hydro Ottawa, and Moment Energy.
The BluWave-ai technology suite employs AI prediction and optimization to manage battery energy storage systems (BESS) alongside electric loads, particularly EVs, mitigating electricity load from all sources. This is expected to save on costly grid infrastructure upgrades. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that AI-driven digitization of power networks could save $1.8 trillion by 2050 in deferred grid investment.
The project involves operating two BESS units: one at Area X.O as a behind-the-meter system, and another at Hydro Ottawa’s Dibblee Road facility as a front-of-meter deployment.
The project addresses the increasing demand EVs place on the distribution grid during peak times. Projections estimate a rise from 901,000 zero-emission light-duty vehicles to 5 million by 2030 in Canada. Simultaneous charging at 7 kW would require 35,000 MW, about Ontario’s total production capacity.
By 2030, Canada’s grids could face a 5GW peak demand from EV charging. BluWave-ai data indicates 15% of vehicles are already grid-connected. This project enhances BluWave-ai’s EV Everywhere Pan-Canadian Infrastructure cube by integrating with batteries directly within distribution.
The combined energy storage of 5 million vehicles, with an average battery size of 63 kWh, would total 315,000 MWh or 315 GWh. This exceeds Canada-wide grid-scale battery storage projections. In Ontario, the IESO plans for 3GW / 12 GWh, creating the possibility of additional storage via EVs and stationary storage in the distribution grid.
Devashish Paul, CEO and Founder of BluWave-ai, notes the potential of EVs as a decentralized mobile battery fleet, offering a flexible resource for grid resilience. He added that the placement of BESS inside distribution grids mitigates the impact of EVs on the grid.
Sonya Shorey, President & CEO of Invest Ottawa, said that this collaboration highlights the ingenuity of homegrown companies scaling in the region. By combining BluWave-ai’s advanced AI software with Area X.O’s infrastructure, they are driving solutions that make energy systems smarter and more resilient.
The AI-driven system will make real-time decisions based on factors such as load prediction, EV loads, energy prices, and grid conditions to ensure EV’s and batteries work in an automated manner to help the grid while maximizing the needs of EV drivers.
EV drivers can connect to the BluWave-ai EV Everywhere platform at www.ev-everywhere.ca for direct rewards for their smart charging including a Canada wide Clean Charge Challenge.
Utilities can deploy EV Everywhere in their service area working directly with BluWave-ai.
